National Fish and Chip day this Friday might have been postponed, but it doesn’t stop us celebrating one of the nation’s dishes!
There is conflicting opinion behind the history of the dish with who and where it originated still being debated – all that we know is that we’re glad that this finger licking delicious combo was discovered.
With many of our favourite restaurants temporarily closed we’ve picked out a few offering take-away or delivery service so that you can still enjoy a feast of a fish supper.
The Fishmarket, Newhaven
Located in Newhaven, you can smell the sea air as you wait for the catch of the day to be served. All food is cooked to order and is the result of a collaboration between Welch Fishmongers and the team behind acclaimed seafood restaurant Ondine.
Order online, pick a time and collect yourself or choose to have them delivered to your door by Deliveroo– either way you will NOT be disappointed. We used the click and collect service a week or two ago and the ‘lockdown’ system they have in place is excellent, only to be surpassed by the quality (and quantity!!) of the fish and chips. Slightly on the more expensive scale but, in my opinion, worth every penny.

L’ Alba D’Oro, New Town
Having called Edinburgh home for over 40 years, L’Alba D’Oro is somewhat of an institution. A family-run business who had a great vision to serve the best quality fish and chips in the city and in 2014 did just that, but being awarded the title of No.1 Fish and Chip Shop (not just Edinburgh but) in the UK.
With a loyal local following the establishment has ensured it can still serve its customers, a quality fish supper, in these strange times through online ordering and customer collection or delivery from Tuesday to Sunday.
Franco’s Fish Bar, Stockbridge
Serves up a great fish supper and caters to a whole range of other take-away tastes too. From school kids fancying a cheeky bite on the way home through to families take-away night and satisfying late night munchies, Franco’s is loved by many throughout Edinburgh.
Franco’s has been offering a delivery option via Just Eat for a while now so it’s easy to order and even easier to enjoy!
