I. J. Mellis, opened in May 1993 by the cheese connoisseur of the same name, pioneered the artisan cheese scene in Scotland’s capital. Noticing the scarcity of quality cheeses available, Iain Mellis decided to reacquaint the citizens of Edinburgh with the significant difference in flavour between farmhouse cheese and that mass-produced in a factory. I. J. Mellis quickly became a success and now boasts of providing the most delicious variety of unpasteurised cheeses.
George Mewes
George Mewes is another cheesemonger helping place Edinburgh on the map as a destination for the nation’s turophiles. Specialising in unusual cheeses otherwise hard to find, George Mewes sources his produce from Continental artisans as well as British cheese connoisseurs helping him provide a palatable foreign variety alongside his in-shop matured selection.
Valvona & Crolla & Henri
Valvona & Crolla LTD and Henri are two other artisan delicatessens offering a copious selection of foreign fromage delights sourced mostly in France and Italy. Bringing more to the table, these charming enterprises also offer a delectable charcuterie selection paired beautifully with the cheese menu. If this isn’t tempting enough then the selection of Italian and French wines will surely bewitch the taste buds.
