Q&A with Image Consultant Zoe Rodrigues

We’re delighted to introduce you to Zoë Rodrigues, a lady that loves the happiness and joy that clothes, fashion (and all things stylish!) can bring. Zoë runs a personal image and style consultancy and her personalised services can not only help you look your best but also boost your confidence and self-esteem. Sounds good to us!

Tell us a little bit more about yourself and how you came to be a personal style consultant?

I’ve been interested, or probably more truthfully, obsessed by clothes and fashion for as long as I can remember. It started with creating outfits for my Barbie dolls, progressing to my younger siblings, and eventually “graduating” to my three children and even my husband. Though Barbie was undoubtedly the most willing participant!

What exactly is a personal style consultant and what can a client expect from your services?

A personal style consultant helps to bring out the best in you.  What we choose to wear has a huge impact on our mood, behaviour and confidence. It may sound like a cliché, but it’s the absolute truth. My job is to work with my clients to ensure they not only look great but they feel great; regardless of age, size or shape.

I like to take time to really get to know my clients and their objectives, usually during an initial complimentary face to face consultation. I then work with them to tailor my services for their specific requirements. It could be a more in-depth Style Consultation, a Wardrobe Refresh, help finding that special outfit, or a combination of all.

How has your style evolved through different phases of your life?

My style has changed so many times and still does. As a child of the 70’s my first fashion mistakes were made in the 80’s – I still remember wearing a pair of purple pointed shoes and green tights (although not together)!

As a student I spent a year in Spain, which opened me up to so many new influences. Much later, I spent time in Italy and that’s when my style really changed. I learned so much about fashion – just walking though the streets was a source of inspiration.

I think we live in very exciting times and whilst there will always be new “trends”, the key is wearing what suits and flatters. I embrace the French approach which involves really getting to know your body and how to compliment it. I also like to invest in classic, stylish pieces and update these regularly with a few on-trend items and accessories.

Who is your own style icon?

My first fashion icon was my grandmother, Cecilia. The way she styled herself was amazing, there wasn’t an inch of her that was granny-like; she was so polished and chic. Nowadays, that’s a more difficult question. It’s probably fair to say that I don’t have a single style icon but I admire many, like Sophia Loren, Lauren Hutton, Rachel Zoe, Sienna Miller and Mary Seng to name a few.

How do you stay up to date with the latest trends?

I read everything I can get my hands. I find social media very useful to keep up to date with the latest trends, and I follow a number of fashion sites and bloggers. The streets outside can also provide an excellent source of fresh ideas.

Where do you go in Edinburgh for style inspiration?

Style inspiration is all around us in Edinburgh; we’re so lucky to be part of such an amazingly diverse and cosmopolitan city. I studied art at university, so walking through our fantastic galleries gets the creative juices flowing. The city centre is brilliant for high street and luxe items, while Stockbridge and the south side provide many bespoke boutiques and vintage hidden gems.

Three top tips for working a look with confidence?

1. Be true to yourself. You’re unique and your style should reflect your personality
2. Wear something that fits, flatters and enhances your complexion
3. Always wear a smile!

What is your all-time top tip for a first time visitor to Edinburgh?

A walk around the Old Town, being surrounded by such visual ancient history is beyond words. As a local, we take it for granted, but to look up and see the castle from Princess Street gardens or look down from the castle and see our amazing city across to the Firth of Forth takes my breath away every time!

And no visit would be complete without food – and in Edinburgh, we’re spoilt for choice, but Ondine has to be my all-time favourite!

Finally, what is your life motto (if you have one!)?

“The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra”
