Hidden Edinburgh recently visited Shish, a new Turkish-style restaurant in Potters Row, Newington. Immerse yourself in Turkish flavours and feasts at this latest tasty edition to open on Edinburgh’s southside.
A Modern Take on Tradition
The concept of Shish is to serve as a gathering place for families and friends to enjoy good food and company. Its inviting atmosphere, consisting of modern stylish decor, soft lighting, and ultra-comfortable velvet seating, makes it ideal for both large get-togethers and intimate dinners.
A Menu of Heritage
The passionate chefs of Shish have crafted an inspired menu, full of true authenticity and flavour. Karisik Izgara, a traditional mixed grill platter, stands out with chargrilled lamb and chicken, lamb ribs, chicken thigh, succulent meatballs and adana kebab.
Tire Kofte, skewered tomato-infused kofte served with a buttery tomato sauce and garlic yoghurt, is also a highlight. Kafes, a juicy whole rack of lamb carved and served at your table, as well as Levrek, a grilled marinated seabass served with olives, capers and asparagus, are also featured. Lastly, Kusbasili Pidi, a Turkish-style flatbread topped with cubes of beef, capsicums and tomatoes, rounds out the menu.
Refreshing and Alcohol-Free
The restaurant bar is dry and non-alcoholic drinks come in a variety of options, including house-made mocktails such as Sweet Dream (pineapple juice, passion fruit puree, coconut syrup, grenadine, and double cream), Fizzy Crush (fresh berries, grenadine, sugar syrup, lime juice, and topped with lemonade), and My Heaven (mango juice, passion puree, elderflower cordial, sugar syrup and lime juice).
What We Ate
We started with a complimentary bread that can be torn up and dipped into the most delicious dip.
Mains
Kirma Tavuk – grilled boneless chicken thigh infused with onion, stock, yoghurt and grape molasses.
Saucuklu Pide – Kashkaval cheese and sucuk.
Mixed Cold Meze Platter – A selection of al the cold mezze starters
Ciger Tava – Pan fried liver, cumin, cayenne powder and black pepper.
Dessert
We went for the Sutlac – a Turkish style baked rice pudding and Baklava – a slice of baklava served with vanilla ice cream
Shish Edinburgh really hits the mark, the menu is exciting and full of fresh flavours, staff are really friendly and the non alcoholic bar means you wont wake up with a hangover the next morning. We highly recommend adding this to your list of restaurants to try out in the city.
